
Walk through any online gardening forum and you’ll find the same complaint repeated hundreds of times: “I put up a fence and the groundhog got in anyway.” It’s a common enough experience that many gardeners conclude fencing simply doesn’t work against groundhogs. But that conclusion is wrong. The truth is that most groundhog fences fail not because fencing is an ineffective strategy, but because they’re built with the same assumptions used for keeping out dogs or deer, when groundhogs require an entirely different set of design considerations. Understanding exactly why fences fail is the fastest way to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Failure Point 1: No Underground Barrier
By far the most common reason a groundhog fence fails is that it was never designed to stop digging in the first place. Gardeners often set posts, attach fencing, and stop there, treating the fence as a purely above-ground structure. But groundhogs are exceptional excavators, and their default response when they meet an obstacle is to dig underneath it, right at the base, rather than searching elsewhere for a gap.
A fence with no buried component, or one buried only a few inches, offers almost no resistance to this behavior. Within days, sometimes within hours, a motivated groundhog will have tunneled underneath and resumed feeding as if the fence weren’t there at all.
The fix: Dig a trench 12 to 18 inches deep along the entire perimeter and bend the bottom 10 to 12 inches of fencing outward, away from the garden, forming an L-shape buried flat beneath the soil. This intercepts digging at the exact point groundhogs attempt it, rather than relying on depth alone.
Failure Point 2: Ignoring That Groundhogs Can Climb
This is the failure point that surprises people most, largely because groundhogs don’t look like climbers. Their heavy, low bodies suggest an animal built for burrowing, not scaling vertical surfaces. But the honest answer to the question so many gardeners eventually ask, can groundhogs climb fences, is yes. As members of the squirrel family, groundhogs retain genuine climbing ability, and a groundhog climbing fence is a documented, common behavior, not a rare exception.
Fences built with this in mind, and fences built without it, differ in one specific design detail: what happens at the very top. A rigid, fully secured top edge gives a climbing groundhog exactly what it needs, a stable surface to grip and pull itself over.
The fix: Leave the top 12 to 18 inches of fencing unattached to your posts so that section flexes outward and downward under weight, causing a climbing groundhog to fall back rather than gain a foothold. An outward 45-degree angle at the top achieves the same result if a flexible section isn’t practical for your setup.
Failure Point 3: Using the Wrong Material
Chicken wire is the material most commonly used in failed groundhog fences, largely because it’s inexpensive and easy to find at any hardware store. Unfortunately, it’s also lightweight, prone to rusting, and easily torn or pushed aside by a determined adult groundhog. Wide mesh openings on lower-grade fencing also allow smaller or younger groundhogs to squeeze through entirely, bypassing the digging and climbing problems altogether.
The fix: Use galvanized hardware cloth or welded wire fencing with openings between half an inch and two inches, prioritizing the tighter end of that range for the lower two to three feet of the fence, where digging and chewing pressure concentrate. This single material change dramatically improves the durability of ground hog fencing over multiple seasons.
Failure Point 4: Weak Gates and Corners
Even a well-designed fence can fail at its weakest structural points, and gates are almost always the culprit. If a gate doesn’t extend below the surface the way the rest of the fence does, it becomes the easiest digging target on the entire perimeter, since the soil underneath a gate threshold is rarely as compacted as the ground the fence is buried in.
Corners present a similar, if smaller, risk. Wire tension often loosens at corners over time due to the mechanical stress of turning direction, creating small gaps that widen with each passing season if left unaddressed.
The fix: Extend hardware cloth beneath gate thresholds, or install a buried paver or concrete strip there. Inspect corners periodically and re-tension or re-secure wire as needed.
Failure Point 5: No Ongoing Maintenance
Even a fence built with every design element correct can degrade over time. Soil settles, wire loosens, vegetation grows up and over the fence line providing an unintended climbing aid, and small gaps can open up at seams where sections of fencing were joined. Gardeners who install a fence once and never check it again are often the ones surprised months or years later when a groundhog finally gets through.
The fix: Walk the fence perimeter every few weeks, particularly in early spring when groundhogs emerge from hibernation hungry, and in late summer when young groundhogs disperse to establish new territory. Address small issues, a loose seam, a shallow spot in the buried apron, before they become full breaches.
Failure Point 6: An Active Burrow Too Close By
Sometimes a fence fails not because of a design flaw, but because a groundhog burrow already exists within or very near the protected area. In this situation, the animal doesn’t need to breach the perimeter from outside, since it’s already living inside it. No amount of fence engineering solves this particular problem.
The fix: Before finalizing your fence layout, check for active burrow entrances nearby. Encourage relocation by loosely stuffing entrances with soil or newspaper and monitoring over several days for signs of continued activity, then plan your fence line accordingly once the area is confirmed clear.
Building a Fence That Actually Works
A groundhog proof fence isn’t complicated in concept, but it does require attention to details that ordinary fencing ignores. Bury the bottom in an outward-facing L to stop digging. Leave the top loose or angled to stop climbing. Use tight, durable mesh instead of chicken wire. Reinforce gates and corners. Maintain the fence over time. And make sure you’re not fencing in a problem that’s already inside the perimeter.
Address these six failure points, and you’ll have built the fence that most gardeners wish they’d built the first time, one that actually works, season after season, without repeated repairs or repeated disappointment.
